Newsletter/Mailing List

Post by Wbdsgnr1 » Mon Oct 04, 2004 8:01 pm

hey everyone.

I was doing some thinking. As a lot of you know my life has been kinda.... I dunno the word for it, like I have no direction. All the things I used to want to do with my life I dont want anymore.

So I have decided to take a couple of my favorite things and try to combine them. I want to have my own Magazine. I figuire since I have graphic/web experience/schooling and I work for the largest printing business (in the magazine plant) that this should help.

But its a hard business to crack into and slow moving. I've been reading websites about how to start publishing your own magazine and thers not a lot of info out there. I will look into getting books from the library or store about it too. Im also trying to go back to college at Western Kentucky University to finish up my Bachelors.

So heres the part where I need you guys. I cannot be the designer, writer, editor, layout, publisher, etc all in one. Im starting out small with a newsletter/mailing list. I need contributors for the art/articles and you can send me ideas for topics you would like to see in it. Updated information would be available on my website that will be linked into this too.

And of course all of you would get a free copy. I will pass it around here locally to friends, and lay a pile of them at local pagan shops around Kentucky, etc. So if any of you are good artists, or writers, or if you have your own incence, oils, brews, charms or wahtever that you make and pagans might be interested in I would like to know.

I also know this is not going to be cheap but its not going to be fancy at first. Very small, few pages, with few colors. It will grow slowly but as you tell people about it and people come to this site and my website I am hoping it will grow and be a full color magazine with lots of pages in it one day.

I am very dedicated to seeing this happen. I know Firelord and I have always wanted to work for ourselves and not anyone else. Its hard, expensive and time consuming but you make your own hours and work from home. I always hate when people say they will support something like this and then dont follow through. I was hoping that my friends and fellow pagans would be there for me when I need them the most.

Please post all your thoughts, good and bad.

blessed be

PS - I made this an announcement so it wouldn't get auto pruned.

I am ready and willing! Go you for reaching for your dream sweetie. I would be more than willing to help you out any way I can. We made magazines for a class last year (took a whole semester) and I was the editor. MY group's magazine had somewhere around 80 pages. I think turned out wonderful.

Anyways. Just talk to me whenever you need something. I can write articles, find someone to interview, find an artist (I live near Savannah which is a huge art city). In short, I'll hook ya up ;)

Ok, i'd love to be a help, but i'm not a grand artist, nor am i a lover of interviewng ppl... (i have yet to interview my vet for my english final... which is due in... *thinks...* 6 days DAMN IT! NOw its on my mind.... THANKS A LOT!)And more on the interviews or article writing... i can spell, nor use grammer worth my little toenail.... Every once in a while i might write something that sounds interesting... like.... nope nope... not that.... anyways,

(This is in bold so you are certain to see it through my mumbling...) If you want a pagan comic go to ohmygods.timerift.net It is one of the funniest things i have read, and it is a newspaper style comic. And its pagan based. *smiles*

Now... theres my sugestion... if you had that comic in your mag, i would buy it daily just for that. (and because i'd be suporting someone i knew... sort of..)

Anywyas, enough of my ramblings... Endings.

My favorite pagan comic strip is PUFT

Has anyone read that one? They make fun of the stereotype pagans/wiccans/satanist and the fluff bunnies too and they have this Firefly...

Anywayz, totally funny. Check them out if you can find their site. I lost the URL.

But im glad your all willing ot help. With most of you being so far away from me we would need to do a lot of stuff through the mail. And I am going to try to pay for as most of it as I can.

In which case we would have to all exchange addresses (hence the mailing list part so you can receive a copy) and I will try to keep everyones address updated when people move, etc. And I would never publish or give out your address to anyone without permission -- like if you guys wanted a way to contact each other ya know? That might be cool.

But dont post your addresses on here. You can email them too me or I will create a form on my website for everyone to fill out.

And thanks so much everyone!!!! >:D<

I'd have to agree with Rune. Most of the time I'm pretty busy with school and work and all, but maybe when I go on spring or summer break I'll have some time to help out. I've been told I'm a pretty good writer, so if ya needed me for that, or as an editor during that time, I'd be happy too. Also, you might even include (with th permission of the authors of course) some of the viewpoints written on this board about certain pagan issues in your magazine. I think that'd be an awesome idea, and anything I've written/will write on this board I give you permission to use if ya want. Good luck on the going back to school thing btw. :-)

well thank you everyone. Im so glad you guys are really excited as I am.

And Cincelia, its great that you have a scanner. I have one too but that would make for faster sending of pics to me if you just email them to me or post them here on the board I can download them myself. Altho they should be high-resolution and not 72 dpi like is standard for the web. And of course I will use your pics or FairyDusts or writing or poetry or anything else from my frineds here.

It would hvae to be truly bad for me to turn it down at this point. :)

Got to this late but I'll lend a hand. I think though, that with my busy schedule the best way for me to help would be if you say "Hey, I need a piece of clip art with this theme" or "Can you write an article about mugwort?" and then I'll have a focus - and give me a deadline, I gotta have one of those :-D
It's funny that you brought this up because I've had a friend of mine who has been nagging me for the past month saying that I should have been a writer LOL
Are you going to have regular columns, you know, like incense of the week or something like that? If you do, that would work out really well for me to help because, like I said, I work best if I know what I need to produce and when it's got to be done.
Let me know.

Yeah, I have to agree with Stormy there. Juggling two companies right now, as well as studying and planning on moving and doing some structual changes to davtri.com into a new server (which will require total re-coding to fit in a new framework and move it out of cgi) as well as helping my wife with her classes when she needs assistance. well, it doesn't leave a lot of time.

On the flip side, if you need an article or two or a poem, short story or whatever, let me know and give a topic or list of prefered topics that would fit into the letter's theme and I should be able to get them completed for you (as long as it's not last minute type things). Also, I will possibly be doing some additional phtography, so I may have various pictures you could use.

Now, on to the whole scanner thing. Weather web or print, it's best to scan images at 300 dpi. (Yes, I know for print you can go a lot higher, but for home scanners and anything outside of some major leave graphics work, it's not usually needed and 300 converts down to 72 fairly well).

Well I really wish i could have an issue for Samhain but I know thats so out of the question. So maybe Yule? But that doesn't seem like a good point for begining anything, its more for planning over the winter.

So I finally thought, Ostara it is! Spring and renewal and all that good stuff.
Does that work for everyones deadlines? :)
