I am a bit confused? MAybe I just don't liket his style of writing and can't follow it, but who is being persecuted here? People of other religions? Fundamentalist Christians?
As for "Clash of civilizations", very few people make that quote any more, the book, while interesting, has been largely discredited among academics. A better book on the divide between societies is Orientalism by Edward Said.

If you want to become whole,
let yourself be partial.
If you want to become full,
let yourself be empty.
If you want to be reborn,
let yourself die.
If you want to be given everything,
give everything up.
let yourself be partial.
If you want to become full,
let yourself be empty.
If you want to be reborn,
let yourself die.
If you want to be given everything,
give everything up.

Me, I use the term only when someone makes a far-reaching statement that I disagree with in my very soul!
Usually when somebody says "No Thanks, I drink Pepsi.", and then I always respond with "Blasphemer!!!"

Trying to create a world, even in words, is good occupational therapy for lunatics who think they're God, and an excellent argument for Polytheism. -S.M. Stirling
